Send a great gift to loved ones in Australia for as
little as R200 – and there is still enough time!

Here’s a seriously cosmopolitan story. Californian native Rivky Shuchat and her Canadian hubby Yossi live in Australia and can deliver stunning Yom Tov gifts for South Africans. They operate a web-based business delivering a range of kosher food-baskets and hampers as well as a selection of Jewish gifts all over the country at very reasonable prices.

Their website is called “Shabbat Jewish Hampers” and Rivky’s famous freshly baked Challah is at the heart of it all. Well, actually, the recipe comes from Chana Zeiger O”BM and via Rivky’s mother – but you can read that long story below.

“You’ll be glad to know you’ve arrived at the right place,” says Rivky on her website, if “you are looking for a hamper that includes freshly baked Challah, that unique Jewish gift for a friend or a loved one or a special Yom Tov item.”

Yossi contacted MyShtetl.co.za yesterday to tell us he and Rivky can still deliver gifts to anywhere in Australia if ordered by Thursday mid-day (SA time).

And, if the destination is on the East Coast (Sydney, Melbourne, etc), they can take orders until next Monday. “Our aim is to make gift giving as easy as 1-2-3,” says Yossi.

What South Africans are giving down under

Asked what the most popular gifts their South African customers are giving this year, Yossi that the most popular item is what they call “A taste of Rosh Hashanah” which goes for $59 AUD (about R390) and the “Rosh Hashana we've got you covered” which goes for $89 AUD (about R580).

People who are sending gifts to lots of people like their $29 AUD (about R189). “And, of course, there is our ever-popular “Tzedokah Box” at $69 AUD (about R450) which is always popular with our SA customers,” says Yossi.

Rivky’s Challah story from her website...

As I hope you enjoy browsing through this site, I wish to share with you my inspiration for baking Challah, which was the driving force to launching this site.

This meaningful story takes place in my hometown Simcha Monica, California.

In a one-bedroom apartment, a woman stood over her dining room table. Reaching for the flour, eggs, sugar, water, yeast, salt, and then the last ingredient, a sprinkle of love, she would carefully mix and knead the dough until it became a soft and smooth texture.

This woman was Mrs. Chana Zeiger. Her body was frail, yet her determination was strong. Her sight was gone yet she was able to see the beauty of the Mitzvah of making Challa. Week after week, she fulfilled the Mitzvah of Challa, one of the three special Mitzvos of a woman. Mrs. Zeiger became older and took ill. She passed away but her love for Shabbos was not forgotten.

At that time my mother decided to make Challa each week in memory of Mrs. Zeiger. This love for the Mitzvah of Challah my mother has passed on to my sisters and myself. I was inspired to take on the Mitzvah of Challa in memory of Mrs. Zeiger O”BM for if a woman who was blind can see the importance of this Mitzvah, than so can I.

The name Chana is a special name for a woman for it is an acronym of the three special Mitzvos given to women.

• Chet-Challa
• Nun-Niddah- the laws of Mikvah and family purity
• Hey-Hadlakot Narot- lighting Shabbat candles

When taking off a piece of the Challa dough, it is a very auspicious time to pray for others, whether it is for health, children, sustenance, or peace. When I make the Challa dough and take off a piece, I have men, women, and children, in mind for blessings. If you know of anyone that needs a blessing, please give me their Hebrew name and their mother’s Hebrew name (using the contact us link at the top of the page) and I will have them in mind when making the Challa.

This sweet recipe was made with love and the special Shabbos spice. It is a recipe from my family and I am so glad I am able to share it with you.

Publisher’s note: For Shtetlers who have friends and family deep down in Oz, it’s worth recording their website details.
They are a year-round business and this is a very convenient way to send a gift at any time.
Heck, for two hundred bucks you can just as well send a Challah and gift just for Shabbas
every now and then just to remind your loved ones you’re thinking of them!
