Organizing a sumptuous brunch for 90 people is all in a day’s work for Grant Maserow, KwaZulu-Natal’s newly appointed Community Liaison Officer. 24 July saw the hosting of a “Meet and Greet”, aimed at welcoming newcomers to the province and providing an opportunity for them to network with others and integrate themselves and their families into the community.
“It’s important to make people aware that there is a Jewish community, and a warm and welcoming one,” said Maserow. “We want to help people to settle in; at the end of the day, everyone benefits because we strengthen the bonds of the entire community.”
At least 20 new families have moved to the Sunshine Coast in the last 18 months. Their impressions have been positive. “It was really nice - a warm welcome indeed!” said Chen Read, who relocated with her young family three months ago.
The Shargey family have lived in Durban for over a year – long enough to be considered locals, but with the memories of their own move fresh in their minds. The function was “a great morning and so successful,” said Mandy Shargey. “Thanks again for making us all feel so welcome and at home!”
In fact, Durban’s draw is so strong that Sascha Keates recently moved back after having traveled and lived all over the world. “We all had such a wonderful time meeting new – and old – people,” she said of the function.
Of course, staunch Durbanites are the most proud of their city. “We are a small but vibrant community,” said David Simpson, President of the Council of KwaZulu-Natal Jewry (CKNJ). “We strongly encourage you to become a part of our community. Should you require any help, the CKNJ’s door is always open.”
The CKNJ have established the Living KZN programme to promote the wonderful lifestyle offered in the province, and to encourage and assist Jewish families in their relocation.
In addition to the “Meet and Greet” function, the Community Liaison Officer aims to assist potential residents with finding suitable employment and business opportunities.
