World Class International Presenters

Here are 12 great reasons to come to Limmud Conference on the 8th and 9th of August in Johannesburg this year:

  1. Richard Freund, “Jewish Indiana Jones”, world renowned archaeologist has lead excavations in Bethsaida, Qumran, and the Cave of Letters.
  2. Jonathan Fine comes from the International Institute for Counter-Terrorism and the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya. He will present on terrorism, guerilla warfare and arms control.

    Volunteers still needed

    Limmud SA is organized and run by volunteers. Our Conference in August will not be possible without its volunteers. They are the core of Limmud SA. Our pre-Conference team needs a range of skills to help put together the most successful conference yet.

    • Are you a twitter tycoon? Are you a behemoth of blogging? Do you enjoy spending hours on Facebook? Well then, we need your help! We are looking for a volunteer to expand Limmud’s South African presence on and across all social networks and websites with our PR and marketing team. Up to the job?     • Are you an IT wizard? Do you enjoy designing websites and are looking for that creative avenue to express your IT talents? We are looking for some specialists to help improve our website, develop our databases, data collection and email newsletters. If you’re up for this challenge, please email Brett Wilks (wilks.brett@gmail.com).
    • Are you a gifted writer? Can you churn out essays, blurbs in next to no time? Have you ever considered helping us with writing and covering Limmud events and liaising with journalists to increase coverage on Limmud SA?     • Are you a budding artist, a brilliant graphic designer/illustrator with an eye for detail? Help us design all our conference signage and conference posters. Brand our conference venue!     • Do you love the buzz of conference? Do you enjoy the challenge of making this the best event the participants will ever experience? Get involved with our delegate care and logistics teams.     1. Where did Limmud originate?

    Limmud or ‘Learning’ started in the United Kingdom in 1980 and has since grown to become the largest communal event in UK Jewry, attracting over 2,500 people to its annual conference. Limmud has now spread internationally to over 45 communities and according to Limmud UK some 40,000 people attended a Limmud event in 2009.

    2. When Limmud SA start in South Africa? What is Limmud SA's structure?

    Limmud SA started in South Africa in 2007. It is a registered Non Profit Organisation (NPO). Limmud SA is the most exciting, innovative educational volunteer based organisation committed to Jewish education across the entire South African Jewish Community.

    3. What does Limmud SA do?

    Through its annual conferences, Limmud SA offers access to some of the world's most dynamic Jewish educators, performers and minds. Utilising all educational styles including lectures, workshops, text-study sessions, film, meditation, discussions, exhibits and performances ensures that Limmud SA maintains the broadest appeal to the numerous interests within the community.

    4. Who works for Limmud SA?

    Limmud SA is a volunteer organisation of over 300 volunteers nationally. Our volunteers plan, organise and implement our three national conferences and day Limmud SA events. Each region’s annual conference is organised by a local organising committee of volunteers all overseen by Limmud SA’s national committee.

    5. What is Limmud SA's goal?

    Wherever you are going, whoever you are, Limmud SA will take you one step further on your Jewish journey.

    6. Who presents at Limmud SA conferences?

    Limmud SA is committed to tapping into the breadth and richness of our own community. We believe every Jew has something to teach and learn. Anyone can be a presenter and everyone should be a learner.

    7. Where are Limmud SA’s conferences?

    Limmud SA has 3 national conferences in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. If you've never been to our conferences before, we are currently organising Taste of Limmud events in all of these cities and Pretoria so you can sample Limmud SA for yourself – watch this space!

    9. I’ve heard Limmud SA is left wing and anti-Orthodox in its political and religious views? Is this true?

    False. Limmud SA is an independent and neutral organization.

    Limmud SA is not affiliated to any religious or political ideology. We are focused on cross-communal education within the greater South African Jewish community. We are committed to the entire Jewish community as a whole and do not align ourselves to any particular practice of Judaism. All Jews, irrespective of their religious beliefs and political views are invited and welcome to help us build Limmud SA.

    10. Who funds Limmud SA?

    Limmud is a non profit organization that relies on donations from the SA Jewish community and the sale of conference tickets. Currently we are structured that 75% of our income is generated by conference sales and 25% is reliant on communal donations.
