"The cherry on the top is on MyShtetl"
Lynette Douglas
Lynette Douglas’ project to bring fabulous and creative recipes to the kosher community every week has drawn a great response. Lynette has really hit a nerve by leaving out meat, poultry and fish to provide tasty recipes your family will want to eat again and again – at budget prices.
In her own words, Lynette explains how the project came about:
One day I went to buy a frozen chicken for Shabbat dinner. There was an older woman at the freezer who took out a chicken looked at it and shook her head and put it back. I asked her what was wrong with the chickens and she said they chickens were alright, but that she could not afford the price, so would not have a chicken for Shabbat.
I was most upset about this and wrote a letter to the Jewish Report saying that we are short-changing our elderly Jews who want to keep kosher and also the young children of big frum families who cannot always afford meat, chicken or fish daily.
Lynette wrote a letter in the Jewish Report, spoke to the Chief Rabbi, the UOS, MyShtetl and ChaiFM.
Then she arranged with the “wonderful people at KosherWorld,” aka Adelle and Joel Back, “who agreed to ensure that they stocked all the ingredients for, and distribute printed copies of, the weekly recipe.”
An amazingly industrious Lynette has also involved Yeshiva Girls in the project and plans to start holding competitions “for teens, grandparents and anyone else who would like to participate.”
She has already collected donated prizes. CLICK TO READ LYNETTE'S PILOT BLOG
But, says Lynette, “the cherry on the top is the blog on MyShtetl.co.za where everyone can post recipes and we will choose one recipe to feature as the recipe of the week. If we network, more and more people will join in and benefit from this new, cheaper way of eating so do give our recipes a try and post your tips and ideas and recipes.”
