There is no Jewish body who would not thoroughly enjoy seeing “MY FIRST SONY” – which stars renowned Israeli actor/director Roy Horowitz who has performed this monologue to great acclaim throughout the world for 15 years.
The play is based on one of the most successful Hebrew books ever – it has been translated into multiple languages, Mandarin is the latest! It tells the story of an 11-year old boy, Yotam, obsessed with documenting his life by recording everything on his Sony tape recorder. He keeps a faithful record of episodes of his life. The story unfolds like a cassette being rewound and fast forwarded, focusing on his life, his parent’s foibles and the rite of passage.
My First Sony brims with trauma, forgiveness and love. Horowitz paints vivid pictures of Yotam’s family life as if one is listening to the live recordings themselves, full of flashbacks and memories - both touching and funny – the audience cannot help but turn up the volume on this charming, delicate piece of international theatre.
I often find monologues a tad tedious. This one kept me enthralled to such an extent that when the curtain came down I genuinely thought it was intermission time. Time had stood still as I identified with every moment - funny and sad, the emotions of this young Jewish boy, so brilliantly portrayed.
My First Sony is on at the Theatre on the Square in Sandton until 30 July.

“A beautiful and very well acted play…Not a dull moment. Horovitz is sensitive, natural, and convincing. He successfully play s a child without falling into childness, and gains sympathy without gushing schmaltz.” –Yediot Aharonot
“It is clear that Horovitz is a consummate actor- talented and exciting…Although the story sounds sad, the play is both touching and funny.” –Davar
