By Laine Waldorff

Gilad Shalit, the only Jew in Gaza, was kidnapped by Hamas in 2006 and has been held incommunicado since then, denied any outside contact. This crime against humanity is one of which Hamas is guilty.

Communities around the world, both Jewish and Christian have called for his release but to no avail. This year we commemorate the five years during which Gilad Shalit has been held in captivity.

We invite you to join us as we call for the release of the world’s only political prisoner not allowed visitors.

According to the Geneva Convention, every captured soldier is allowed a visitor from the Red Cross. But Hamas has refused to allow Gilad Shalit the same right. He is the only prisoner with whom the Red Cross is not allowed any contact.

To stand against this travesty, the community is invited to show their support for Gilad Shalit by participating in our solidarity rally which will take place on Thursday 11 August.

At 3:30 we will gather at Yeshiva College in Glenhazel, and from there we will march to Genesis Park in Fairmount. At Genesis Park we will be addressed by leaders and members of the community of Johannesburg.

We hope you will be there; and join us in showing solidarity with this young soldier.
