Catch up on the sexuality debate!
Shtetler comes out & shares his story
Shtetler chirp-fests go from having a good deal of fun, to having a serious argument. This week our users are having one of each: A fun chat over the FaceGlatBook issue – and a very wild one of sexuality that we are struggling to keep above the belt.
The latter leads to an anonymous Shtetler coming out – which clearly touched the hearts of Shtetlers interested to hear his story from a frum upbringing to walking away from his faith, and back to a happy ending.
Feel free to participate – have your say – either in your own name, an assumed name or anonymously.
But please remember that we moderate all posts on MyShtetl and you cannot ever get personal under the cloak of anonymity – and sometimes not even in your own name. But, users, fear not as we will advise or edit you if you break any rules.

THIS WEEK’S BIG ARGY-BARGY
AN ARGUMENT ABOUT SEXUALITY became this week’s big debate after a story about how New York’s Jews rushed out last Sunday to consummate gay marriages on the first day that the process was legal in the state first deviated into the old Orthodox/Progressive debate - but quickly spilled over into sexuality.
Here is just a teaser for you – go and check it out:
DARRENSEVITZ: Sadly it's not only in America. The local reform also marry gay couples.
ILAN SOLOMONS: Darren Sevitz displays the typical Homophobic sentiment which is rife in pockets of the Orthodox and Ultra-Orthdox circles. I have noticed an increasing number of members of the Jewish community are openly practicing Homosexuals but want to live Orthodox Jewish lives.
CHABADGIRL: I know Darren. I don't think he is a homophobe at all!
DARRENSEVITZ: In the words of Don Henley: "You don't know me, you don't know me at all."
VIVIAN: I like and very much agree with Ilan's comment... Not very nice when a frum parent throws out their child due to being different, the reason, because Torah says so.
DARRENSEVITZ: CG is spot on, we have chosen to live our lives according to a value system which regards these activities as wrong... Read my lips - the activities are wrong - the people, yes, they are people and need to be respected as such, but that does not mean I have to accept their behaviour.
ANONYMOUS: As a teenager (I knew I was gay at age 11) I felt like the worst sinner on earth. I was very religious and pleaded with H' to cure me or change me.
In my twenties, I decided to accept the fact that I was homosexual, but to hide it from everyone.
In my thirties… I gave up. I revolted against the religion that refused to accept me.
In my late thirties, I began to feel really empty, dirty, and disillusioned with everything.
I am now 43 years old. I cling to H' with all my might, because it gives me hope and an inner peace so great, that I cannot put into words. I am smiling again.
CHABADGIRL: I wish I could know how difficult it must be. I'm sure no one asks to be born different in this way. I think it must be so hard and must lead to a life time of wondering why people are born this way.
ILAN SOLOMONS: Darren it is homophobic, bigoted attitudes like yours which cause so much suffering and pain for these poor people. Comparing your desire to at treif with someone's God given sexual orientation is despicable to say the least!
LION: A kosher shochet can shecht a springbuck with a kosher knife under completely halachic conditions, the meat is still treif. Gay marriage is not an option. I once expressed surprise to my daughter because I had stumbled over a broken vibrator on a Glenhazel pavement. Her response was, "Dad! Frum people are allowed to have fun!"
